I have to be honest, this post was hard for me to write. It’s probably the most personal I’ve ever gotten. However, my heart is telling me that this is a message that needs to be shared, so we might as well dig in…
Three years ago, my husband and I walked into the doctors office and were surrounded by posters and models of reproductive anatomy. We had been trying to get pregnant for a few years with no success and were at the point where we needed medical intervention to figure out what was going on.
The doctor walked in. He was cold and spoke in short sentences.
I didn’t like him.
The first words out of his mouth were, ‘Based on your test results, the likelihood of you getting pregnant on your own is less than 5%.’
He proceeded to walk through our options, continuing to speak in this cold, detached tone, basically telling us the only option we had to get pregnant was going to cost at least $15,000 per round and it generally takes a few rounds for it to work.
Oh… and I had to cut back on my stress and workload if we wanted to increase our chances.
I should probably explain that at this time in my career I was fortunate enough to have a thriving massage practice.
I was seeing 15-20 clients/week at my home and I was making $8,000- $10,000/month in my practice consistently.
I was living the Massage Therapist dream… or so I thought. The truth was that I was exhausted and on the brink of burnout.
Now, I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE every single one of my clients. A reason I had become so successful in my practice was because I was incredibly selective of who I worked with. Not only did I provide massage services, I also incorporated coaching into my work to help them achieve results in their lives.
I built my business on, what I call, BodyMind Coaching because I knew that learning to tune in and listen to the messages of the body is the key to living a fulfilled, present and connected life.
I believe that stress and pain are a language… and so is your intuition. As a culture that is taught to live from the neck up in our heads, we are missing out on an incredible source of wisdom that resides within every cell of our body.
Which brings me back to the doctors office…
How could someone who is so in tune with her body not be able to get pregnant? What was wrong with me? What was wrong with my body?
While he was continuing to outline our options in his unemotional voice, I heard my intuition kick in.
It was this feeling bubbling up from my gut, into my heart and in this moment of clarity… I heard my heart say, ‘Laura, you don’t have space for a baby when you are carrying everyone else’s s**t’.
As someone who truly wants to help people, it’s easy to put other people’s needs in front of my own. Being called to this work means that you are really good at taking care of others… often at the expense of yourself.
Let me ask you this…
How often do you squeeze in that extra client even though their schedule is full?
How often do you give additional time to a client yet feel guilty charging for the longer session?
How often do you lower your prices or give that extra discount because to get people in the door and, even though a part of you tells yourself you’re helping them, another part of you feels like you aren’t being fully valued.
How often do you feel like you are living week to week, client to client, paycheck to paycheck even though you are giving so much to everyone else?
How often do you feel like your business owns you instead of you owning your business?
While I felt so grateful for everything I had created, I felt like my cup had so many holes in it, that all the abundance I was receiving was draining out just as fast.
I didn’t have space for a baby because my business didn’t have any space for me.
Sitting in this doctors office, was a wake up call. Things had to change if I wanted to welcome my baby into this world.
I left that meeting knowing two things:
1) I had to make at least $15,000 MORE just to try and get pregnant
2) I had to cut back on my physical work load to make room for a baby
Now, if you’re doing the math, that means I have to make more money and do less work.
I would love to tell you that I left that meeting inspired and ready to kick some ass. But the truth was, it sent me into a depression. How was I going to make more money and do less? Not to mention… being a pregnant Massage Therapist is also going to impact my income. Or what about when the baby does come… how was I going to provide for a growing family if I couldn’t work?
The saving grace in this moment was my community. For over the past decade, I have invested in working with coaches. Because of this, I’m surrounded by people who operate from the mindset that challenges in life aren’t meant to hold you back, they are there to propel you forward.
Your greatest challenge is also your greatest opportunity.
In this moment, I began to do what I had taught my clients all those years… Instead of looking outward for the solution, I turned inward. I prioritized my self care and made sure that my business was structured to support me first so the energy I gave my clients came from a place of overflow instead of a place that was draining.
I fully believe that your gut feelings are logical and I tuned back into my intuition and it started my on a journey that has changed my life.
My intuition brought forth an image of my hands reaching tens of thousands of people through the work of other Massage Therapists.
Within a week, I literally found a mentor who showed me how to do just that. I trusted my intuition and invested in working with him. Within 2 weeks, I brought in the same amount of money I would bring in during a normal month. My mind was blown because not only did it work, we now had the funds to pursue our first round of IVF (with a doctor that I actually liked).
While that first IVF round was unsuccessful, something new was being created. I could see a wave of transformation in our industry and the vision became so strong that it was palpable to me.
I saw Massage Therapists & Bodyworkers embracing their business instead of feeling awkward, pushy or ‘salesy’.
I saw healers healing their own mindset around receiving money and breaking the ‘trading your time for money’ trap that keeps most therapists stuck and on a path to burnout.
I saw Bodyworkers across the globe embracing BodyMind Coaching as a new way to help their clients heal without adding more physical work to their schedule.
I saw our clients owning their worth because we, the healing community, owned our own worth.
That brings me to today…
My life has transformed because I took that one challenge and turned it into a great opportunity.
I have been able to work with hundreds of Massage Therapists across the country and inspire thousands more.
I have traveled and spoke across the country and met some of the most incredible people that I would have never have known otherwise.
My business is structured to fill me up so that I can serve to the highest level possible.
Most importantly, I now have the lifestyle that allows me to be the mother I dream of being.
While my baby isn’t here yet (don’t worry… I trust my baby is on the way soon!), this journey has birthed something so much bigger than I could have ever imagined… it has birthed a new era of bodyworkers and healers who own their worth and embrace their business as another way to serve their clients.
My hope for you today is to reframe whatever challenge is in your life and look at it as your greatest opportunity because who you become by stepping up to the challenge and the people you serve is the greatest benefit of this journey.
What will you give birth to by looking at your greatest challenge as your greatest opportunity?
